For the residents of the United Arab Emirates, Friday is like Sunday in the west – a quiet, lazy day of rest. On the first day of the weekend, restaurants try to outdo each other with delectable gourmet brunch buffets. Oysters served on shaved ice, crab, lobster and crispy Peking duck are among just some of the delicacies offered. Decadence is a virtue, as it is after all the most festive meal of the week.

Dubai has established itself as a luxury destination, appealing to wealthy visitors with plenty of money to spend. Many luxury hotels feature opulent guest suites and very expensive restaurants, as well as beautiful spas. After a day of sunbathing, sightseeing and shopping, take a relaxing break in one of the enormous spa complexes.

Beach

There is no shortage of sun, sea and sand in Dubai – although finding a free beach can be a challenge. The lion’s share of beaches are owned by the large resorts, so those who are not guests of the Four Seasons, Hilton or Madinat Jumeirah may have a hard time finding a place to spread their towel. But don’t worry, it may take a bit of effort but even in hyper-expensive Dubai there are free beaches.

Beach

A day at the beach in Dubai doesn’t have to cost a thing, but it is a lot more fun to relax on a comfortable chaise in the shade with a glass of chilled white wine and a dozen oysters. While there are dozens of classy beach clubs to choose from, most clubs are part of the best 5-star hotels and range from comfortable and pricy to luxurious and outrageously expensive.

Shopping

With more than 1200 shops, 120 restaurants and cafés, an enormous aquarium with 30,000 fish, and an Olympic skating rink, the Dubai Mall is a spectacular attraction. Shop at Marc Jacobs and Manolo Blahnik and eat at Ping Pong Dim Sum or Yo Sushi. Enjoy a few rounds on the skating rink when the outside temperature soars to 40 degrees, or relax in a bubble bath at Acqua di Parma.

Family fun

Although many visitors regard Dubai as one big amusement park, the city actually features several real amusement parks. Enormous water slides, real-life movie studios, camel rides and even indoor skiing; everything is possible in Dubai.

Arts & Culture

Nobody knows for how long the Burj Khalifa will continue to be the highest tower in the world. For now, the impressive 829.84-metre-high building in Dubai still holds this record. To get an idea of just how tall the Burj Khalifa is, it is twice as high as the imposing Empire State Building in New York.

Active & Outdoor

Roaring engines, enormous sand trails and deep tyre tracks in the dunes: a desert safari is a popular excursion for visitors to Dubai. Race across the blistering hot sand in a large four-wheel drive, or maybe ski down some sand dunes – anything is possible in Dubai.

Beach
